#16 Blogfolio

1. Introduction Video: At the very beginning of the semester, we were given the task of making an introduction video explaining who we are, what we're interested in, and other basic facts about ourselves.  This project met the second NETS-T standard, because it facilitated authentic learning while using contemporary tools. This also matched part three of this standard, which states that it will be customized and personal activities. This video allowed us to add our own personal touch to this video and customize it to our liking. Also, this was a learning experience for us, because most of us did not have experience with using blogs at all and giving us the directions of uploading it and putting the video on our blog page was interesting and challenging. This was also a way for people who see our blog to know why we have this page, and for others to see our common interest in teaching. I could see myself using this in the classroom for elementary students by having each student prepare something to say about themselves on video and practice their public speaking skills. Since in elementary school it would be difficult to get them to have their own blog and post their own video, but it would be nice to have a class blog that their parents could see.

2. Concept Map: For this assignment, we used technology called Inspiration, that none of us had used before, to create a concept map on a certain subject that we, as teachers, would like to teach to our students.  This project used NETS-T standard two which states "Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments". This activity implemented technology that allowed us to design our own material relevantly, using hyperlinks and creating our own template for the concept map. We chose our topics and they were required to have five different subtopics, this would be something interesting to use in the classroom to give students the freedom to come up with something they're interested in, but also challenge them to meet the requirements.  The use of the Inspiration technology could easily be used in the classroom in elementary schools and would be an easy way to incorporate technology into their learning and helping them use new things and remain interested in a simple task such as a concept map.

3. Website: This assignment used NETS-T standard five which states "engage in professional leadership and growth", this project did this because we had to create a website that we would share with out students and their parents.  This website included a page that we wrote a personal introduction, another page that we created a calendar, and another page with resources for our students to use. This was very enjoyable for me, because we were able to create a page as if we had our own classroom without rules, things we would implement into our classroom, and it gave us the freedom to be original and creative. I would definitely use this in my classroom as a way of communicating with students and parents. This would be a great tool to put copies of homework and links to assignments for students that are prone to losing their work.

4. Movie:  This project met the first NETS-T standard, about facilitating student learning and creativity.  This was one of the most fun projects that we did. We used Microsoft Movie Maker to create a movie about some event that happened in our lives.  This was an opportunity for us to learn how to create a video on our own, put it to music, and upload it to our blog.  This project was also very challenging. To complete this project we used the computers in class and due to our school's technology we had to save our photos through Drop Box and download them daily. It was also a learning experience to see how to put music to our video and compress it to put it on our blog. I could use this in a high school or middle school classroom, but it would be difficult to allow elementary students use this technology. It would however be a way for me, the teacher to document things that we do in the classroom. It would be a way for me to show students things from field trips, projects, literature circles, and much more.  This was a great activity for our class, because we were able to learn more about our classmates and what is important to them and also to build relationships and see how we relate to one another.

5. Turn It In: This assignment fell into the NETS-T standard four that says “promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology and information". In this assignment we were asked to do a number of things, the first things was to answer a number of questions on the internet using certain websites, copying the answers word for word and uploading them to Turn It In. We were required to get a certain percent of plagiarism.  Once we had completed that, we had to rewrite our answers to get rid of our plagiarism.  This was a difficult assignment, because it showed me that Turn It In could sometimes be inaccurate and unreliable.  This activity was useful though to show social responsibility and integrity, which is a lot of the reason that so many teachers use Turn It In to begin with. I could see myself showing students this activity in class if I ever planned on having students turn something in that way, or I could show students just so that they would understand how bad it is to cheat and how easily it could be monitored.

6. Web Tools: This project lines up with the NETS-T standard two that covers customizing and personalizing learning activities to address students. This was a way to engage all of us as education majors.  During this activity we were given three, new, very useful websites that allowed us to make rubrics, quizzes, and more. This was interesting, because it would be a way for us as teachers to allow students to be assessed on their learning and progress online.  This would be especially good to be used with upper elementary grades that have access to computers and can take the quizzes you post online.  The rubric website would also be helpful to make rubrics that can be shared with students.

7. Google Assignment: This assignment works with NETS-T standard number one, which states that it should promote, support, and model creative and innovative thinking and inventiveness. This assignment required us to get in groups and create a Google Group. Once we were in the Google Group, we were required to write a story and make a PowerPoint on an aspect of technology in the classroom. This was an interesting assignment because it first made us use our creativity to come up with a story with others. My group decided to make a Google Doc to share our story and do it on our own time, as well as a Google presentation as the slideshow. This was also a learning experience for me, because I had never used a Google Group before and this was very interesting and something that I could see people using in the classroom for students to share information.

This class has been very useful to me. There are a lot of resources out there for teachers that I did not know about. This class has shown me that there are many ways that we are jeopardizing our students' educations if we do not use technology in our classroom. This class helped me to broaden my horizons when it came to using technology in the classroom. I had no prior knowledge on how I should do this until this class.

I am not a very technology savvy person in my day-to-day life so a lot of the assignments in this class were challenging and I had to learn how to do things that I would not normally have to do. Once I got the hang of how to do the assignments I really enjoyed them and can see myself using the Inspiration program as well as Movie Maker in my classroom.
I enjoyed learning these things because I now feel equipped to teach students using technology in the classroom, an area in which I felt very lacking before this class.  In the future I will continue to use these technologies and more to make my classroom successful.

#14 Safe Practices for Life Online

Safe Practices for Life Online

1-6 Peyton Griggs
1. Facebook, Twitter, SnapChat
2. If students threaten a faculty member, the school, fellow students, or administrators online, they will be arrested. For example, in Beaverton, Oregon, two students were arrested for threatening the school with a shooting on Twitter. In another example, a high school senior tweeted about something explicit that happened between himself and a high school teacher.
3. Sexting- Sending suggestive, sexual, explicit messages or pictures via text messages or social media. (“Lets Settle This Once and for All: What exactly is Sexting?” by Sam Biddle, 7/22/2011, Gizmodo)
Cramming-To try to learn a lot right before an exam
Cookies- It is a small piece of information about your computer that web browsers use when visiting certain websites that allow you to access certain pages.
Trojan Horse-Virus on your computer that tricks your computer into believing that it is fighting viruses but actually fills your computer with viruses
Phishing- Getting financial information from people online and claiming that it is a legitimate business
Spyware- Software that allows a computer user to get information about another user’s activity secretly
Rootkit- Software that allows a user that is unauthorized to gain control of a computer undetected
Zombie- A computer that has been compromised by a hacker, virus, or trojan horse.
4.These screen names are poor choices because they are degrading to the user and are immature and unprofessional.
5.These screen names are degrading and inappropriate and can draw undesired attention to the user that chose the name.
6.When you use a screen name that gives out information about your interests, full name, age, or location, you are risking someone taking advantage of that information.

7-8 Jon’Marie Baucum
7. Good and bad choices of screen names. Write whether you think these are good choices or poor choices and why.
i8sushi2  I think this is bad because this does not seem like it would be very professional
Soccerstar  This one does not seem like it is very professional but I think it is still ok for younger people who are not looking for a profession at the time.
Puppygirl1234  This one seems ok for little children but not for adults or teenagers.
KeKe1995  I think this one is fine. There is nothing offensive or out of line. It is just her name and probably date of birth.
Bookworm  This one has nothing bad, but again, it would not be a very good one for someone looking to be taken seriously.
2BorNot2b This one is not good at all. It is not professional
Choco-holic This one would be ok for children I guess. It still doesn't put off a good image in my opinion
CapitlOfens I don't even know what this says so that is frustrating. I feel like whether you are a child, teenager, or adult you need to have a screen name that can be understood!
AmrcanIdol2 This one seems ok for younger children and teenagers but it might need to be changed if this person is looking for a job it needs to be changed.
BellaIsabella If this is this girls actually name then this is ok for all ages.
DarkAngel666 This one is a very bad one to use because it can be very offensive to people who are big into religion
Karla-Love-1996 This one is ok for anyone and it depends on the profession if it's ok. It isn't offensive or bad but it might not be as professional as some people may like
SimpyMe I don't know if this is a name or suppose to say simply so I'm confused. So it may not be a good one to use because it might confuse other people.
gUn4hiRe I dont think this one should be used as an adult because it is not professional
BabyfaceLA this one is ok for teenagers, but once this person is in there 20s it needs to go.
Watup? This one is ok for younger people but the horrible grammar will definitely turn off potentional employers.

8.Create three different screen names that you think will met all of the following guidelines:
Unlikely to attract negative attention
Free of bad language
Don't reveal too much personal information
Don't reveal a real name, age, or gender

9. (Lauryn Heneghan) My current password has a score of eight based on these questions. It is important to access your password based on these and similar criteria in order to protect yourself from internet predators and hackers. Passwords should not use common or easy to figure out information because it would be too easy to crack and make the user vulnerable to hackers.

#s 10 - 13 - Lindsay Fuller

10. Most & Least common reason students' online accounts are broken into each year:

MOST: Others who know personal things about the student guess the password.
LEAST: A password cracking program is used to crack their password.

11. Malware Analysis: Drive-By Download Thoughts and Summary:

The video, while super cheesy, was actually informative. The man in the video is logging into an infected website with his own computer to show just how quickly your computer can get infected. He also is showing how sneaky and dangerous these websites are. He begins explaining exactly what is going on with the computer and what the program is doing. "Some attacks tip you off by crashing stuff, other times it does nothing, then shows itself later." The website he went to, specifically, was loading the site normally, but when he minimized his screen he showed what was really going on. His computer's desktop changed to a message claiming that he has a spyware infection on his laptop. In his tray there is a new icon also saying, "Your computer is infected. Windows has detected spyware infection!" He clicks the popup icon and a program pops up that he never installed claiming to be a virus scanner.
Other visual cues that a drive-by has hit your machine:
  • Unusual apps in your program bar
  • Your web browser's homepage changed
  • Unfamiliar toolbar appears in your web browser
  • Your browser has new bookmarks that you didn't make
  • Pop-up windows display ads
  • Unusual files in different directories on your computer
After he infects his computer he showed the viewers several different applications and spywares the Malware added then explains how you can prevent this from happening to your own computer. Such as:

  • Keep up with patches - Malware uses tricks to get around old patches
  • Harden your web browser - keep the web setting at the highest security setting
  • Block dangerous file types at your firebox - http & https proxies (inbound and outbound)
  • Use antivirus and anti-spyware software - keep it up to date
Watching this video made me a little paranoid about my own anti-virus scanner not working so I updated it right after. I knew how important it was to have a virus scanner and how bad malware and spyware can be, but seeing just how many programs can be installed on your computer in just one click, really puts it into perspective.

12. 3 Tests to Stay Safe Online 8 Tests

  1. Is your computer protected?
  2. For this quiz I was at a low risk for being unprotected. The 2 questions that made the bar go up were "Do you have a wireless computer" "yes" and "Do you back up your files on a regular basis?" "no".
  3. Are you protecting your identity?
  4. I was at a medium/low risk for this quiz. I got this score because I don't check my bank statement monthly. I know I have no money, so I don't bother checking. I should check anyway. I don't run a regular credit check on myself, annually, like you're supposed to do. I've done it maybe once before. I'm also really bad about not checking for HTTPS before I make any online purchases.
  5. Are you an unwitting accomplice in crime?
  6. I was once again at a medium/low risk on this quiz. I play a lot of online video games so many of these questions seemed to go against me asking about people I met online.

13. False Sales Advertisements Lead to Financial Loss in Excess of $20 Million - A Summary

"From June 2009 to June 2014 the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) received over 6800 complaints regarding criminals targeting online consumers by posting false advertisements for high priced items such as automobiles, boats, heavy equipment, recreational vehicles, lawn mowers, tractors, and other similar items. These complaints total more than $20 million in reported losses."

According to the article, criminals post false advertisements that put an item up for sale with a fake photo to entice the buyer even more. The criminal also uses a phone number or email, then the consumer calls or emails the criminal to buy the item. After the consumer gives the criminal their email, the criminal sends them pictures about the item they're supposedly selling and ensures the consumer's purchase will be safe and secure by using Ebay. However, it's not really Ebay. The criminal sends a false Ebay confirmation email that includes the fraudulent transaction number and expected delivery date of the item.
If the consumer tries to call about their item, the calls are ignored or the line is "busy". Because of this, the consumer never receives their item and they lose whatever amount of money they paid the criminal. The article gives these tips to avoid this happening to others:
  • Use search engines or other websites to research the advertised item or person/company selling the item.
  • Search the Internet for any negative feedback or reviews on the seller, their e-mail addresses, telephone numbers, or other searchable identifiers.
  • Research the company policies before completing a transaction. For example, ensure the seller accepts payments via credit card as Ebay does not conduct wire transfers and only uses PayPal to conduct transactions.
  • Be cautious when responding to advertisements and special offers.
  • Be cautious when dealing with persons/companies from outside the country.
  • Maintain records for all online transactions.

Lastly, they suggest that if you suspect you have become a victim of an internet-related crime to report and file a complain with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.

#13 Guide to Creating Tech-Friendly Classroom Management Strategies

This article discusses how to use technology in the classroom and maintain classroom management while doing so. It is oftentimes hard to use technology without students becoming off task and beginning to do something that they weren't designed to do, but this article shows what steps teachers need to take to prevent this. For example, the first step was for teachers to do their homework by doing all of the lesson planning, leg work, and troubleshooting all before considering getting up in front of a classroom. This means not only know what you are going to teach, but knowing how you can teach it, preparing each workstation for students, and ensuring that if there is a problem that you know how to solve it and have a back up plan.  The second strategy was identifying learning goals and stating objectives out loud. This gives students a bit more motivation and as the article says, "sharpens them." The third strategy was stepping away from the computer.  Of course, in today's time, it is incredibly important to use technology but an overload of it can cause behavior problems and attention issues. The fourth strategy capitalizing on their desire to explore, which can be hard, but giving them time to find answers for themselves while monitoring them and giving them an objective is good for their brain and learning.
In my classroom, I believe technology will be used a lot. It is often hard to expect issues and realize how much work must be put into a lesson using a computer, because in our lives we use our personal laptop and can do whatever we please, but when using a computer in a classroom we must make sure they have to software and much more. Also, in my classroom I think it is important to state goals before a lesson has begun, so I can definitely see myself using that. One thing that I do find very difficult is allowing for free exploration. I remember in school, there were always certain students that would do just about anything to get onto a website that they shouldn't have. I think that as a teacher, especially upper elementary, that it would be difficult to monitor each students screen and make sure that they are behaving properly at all times.

#12 Why So Many Kids Can't Sit Still in School Today

This article was interesting, because it discussed not only that children in the classroom are less attentive now, but why. They also compared things about children now to children from the 1980s. I also found it interesting to see how it negatively effected a child's self esteem to be disciplined in the classroom. There are multiple studies out there that show that students need more movement in the school environment, but this article showed an instance where a student was punished for needing this movement and it ultimately led to him having lowered self-esteem.  Also, in this article they discussed that due to this lack of movement, students now have issues with muscles, flexibility, and have much more energy that is exhibited through disturbances in the classroom.
When I have a classroom, one of my major goals will be to create an environment where all of my students excel not only intellectually, but in social and other aspects. This means that if physical activity can be implemented it will be.  Some students need the ability to move to be able to calm down and focus in later.  Catering to the different types of students in the classroom is important to a classroom teacher, and with more students having ADD/ADHD is is imperative that we take that into consideration when writing lesson plans and making decisions about classroom management.

#10 Videos on 21st Century Education

1. Classrooms of Tomorrow- This video was interesting, because it was completely out of the ordinary to see a classroom where every student is on their cell phone doing work and the teacher is completely okay with it. Growing up, if you had your cell phone out in class then you would get it taken away. I do appreciate that the video suggested how high tech the classroom will be, because there are so many new ways to utilize technology in the classroom. I do, however, think it is a little bit far fetched to have that amount of technology in the classroom at this point in time. The amount of funding it would take to ensure that every student had access to the same level of technology is not very practical right now.

2.The Voice of the Active Learner- Education from a Digital Native's Perspective- This video was something that I have always considered very important. There is an increase of students that get their post-secondary education online now. I believe that eventually a lot of high school students will be given the option to take classes online. I think that this video was an accurate portrait of the "active learner", but I do believe that some students will not succeed as easily online.

3.The Future Starts Now- This video discusses ICT, and how prevalent it is now, but how many teachers and districts are wary about using it in the classroom. They discussed how in Norway they spend a lot of money on school and still have average testing.  In their society, they have a lot of people dropping out of high school and they claim that they will motivate students and create a knowledge-based society. They believe that using technology will make their education better. I agree with this, but it's sometimes hard to train teachers and give them the resources to educate their students.

4. Designing Schools for 21st Century Learning- This video tackles the architecture and design side of learning and schools. He claims that innovation and creativity are the keys to success. Studies show that feeling secure is the key element to learning, and stimulus rich environments help learning.  His goal is to include that in schools. This video states that children need to be given the opportunity to be independent thinkers. I find this video incredibly interesting, and I wish that all schools were designed for learning like this.  I think that a lot of the problem with this video is that the funding isn't there to create all of these wonderful aspects into a normal district.

5. Tools and Resources for The 21st Century Education- I like the resources listed in this video, I wasn't aware of a lot of them. I will definitely use this video in my classroom. I believe that a lot of teachers are very unaware of all of the resources that are out there to make our lives easier.

6. A Vision of 21st Century Teaching- I enjoyed this video, because it showed the expectations and ideas that educators have of education in the 21st century. We are at an interesting point in history and there are a lot of improvements that we can make to give students coming up the best education that has been available before.
